This is a classic case of the dangers in labels, recently opined elsewhere in this blog.

I see problems with some of the so-called "moderate republicans" too. Someone who supports gay rights, is pro-choice , and supports frivolous spending and draconian regulations is not a moderate republican in my opinion. Anyone who in there wildest dreams would support the Democrats Health Care Reform proposals, in any way shape or form, is not a moderate of either party. Compassionate Conservatism sounds good, but in reality it's just increased spending to appease special interests, or worse.

It's a lttle like hearing someone trashing all republicans because of something Ralph Reid or Hannity said. Unfortunately, our voices don't carry as far as those with TV shows, or national syndicated newpaper columnists.

For a Harvard grad, I would expect someone more intelligent. (Maybe he's legacy like Bush 43 and Caroline Kennedy). Seriously how could he slack so much on the research? The Republicans are probably going to break from the far right. It'll be Democrats, Republicans and Conservatives (Theocrats). I hope moderate Dems break off from the far-left so it'll be Republicans vs. Theocrats and Socialists. Republicans would easily win that battle. The left managed to begin the secularization of America, so most people don't want the theocrats in power, but now the left is shoving big government down their throats and they don't want that either. They'll have only one place to turn; a Republican party comprised of today's moderate Republicans, ex-Blue Dogs and ex-Libertarians). The (Socialist) Democrat and the (Theocrat) Conservative parties will dwindle away into the single digits. And hopefully we'll have a single party system. I don't know if that is good or bad but it would surprise me if it split up again decades later.
