In listening to part of today’s hearing about repealing the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, it was a little disheartening to hear Senator John McCain seemingly backtrack on repealing the policy. According to the Washington Post, this is what he said in Iowa in 2006:
“The day that the leadership of the military comes to me and says, ‘Senator, we ought to change the policy,’ then I think we ought to consider seriously changing it.”
Of course, that day came today when the Joint Chief of Staff , Mike Mullen, basically said the policy is not needed. But if one was expecting McCain to jump for joy, well he didn’t. He expressed disappointment at Mullen and then seemed to be backing a policy he once derided.
I know why he’s doing this. He’s up for re-election and facing a real challenge from his right. But that said, I am disappointed…in Senator McCain.
